FROM THE NEWSROOM OF AQUAMEDIAS

February 2005: Underwater effects for the film The Fountain!

In February 2005, AQUAMEDIAS team helped to produce several underwater special effects for The Fountain, produced by Warner Bros. and directed by Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For a Dream, 2000).

Shooting wet for dry, the main character (Hugh Jackman) would begin his movement in the Lotus Position and turn 360 degrees on a axis.

To prepare Mr. Jackman adequately for his underwater scenes AQUAMEDIAS dive professionals aided him in his breath holding techniques and his capacity to move underwater without creating any bubbles.

In addition, custom rigs were designed by Les Production de l'Intrigue to aid the actor to maintain the necessary Yoga postures during the rotation of the actor and the camera movement.

The challenge put forth to the AQUAMEDIAS team was to synchronize the movement and rotation of the actor, very precise camera positions (circular and straight dolly movements) a wind effect created with underwater scooters.

AQUAMEDIAS was able to perform with ease during this very technical shoot, helping to create exactly what the director wished for. With ample preparation, coordination of all departments and our specialized underwater equipment and expertise the shoot was a success.

The AQUAMEDIAS Team is also very happy to have had collaborated on the underwater scenes shot for the latest music video (and commercial) for Quebec artist Lhasa De Sela. In addition we invite you to look out for scenes from the mini-series René Lévesque and the film The Passenger where we had the pleasure to shoot several underwater scenes.

July 2004

The spot, entitled " La Piscine " (for McDonald's), was produced by Jet Fims and directed by Charles-Éric Savard. The project required that 8 actors, completely dressed, perform underwater with Olympic medalist Alexandre Despatie. An ambitious project as few actors are comfortable underwater without a mask or a nose pinch. In addition, the costumes inhibited the actors' movements as their body weight was increased underwater.

These variables required that a specialized casting be organized along with training in breath-holding techniques to allow the actors to perform with ease out of their natural environment. Costume selection was performed in conjunction with AQUAMEDIAS to respond to the esthetic choices of the director, and to ease the task for the actors performing.

May 2004

The spot " Sea Doo Sea Scooter " (for Canadian Tire) was produced by Les Productions Mag2 and directed by Jack Hackel. The principal challenge of this project was to transform, in a realistic fashion, a pool environment to that of a lake at a typical cottage above and below the water.

To accomplish this task, AQUAMEDIAS covered every underwater surface with a special cloth and then placed extensive decorative elements prepared by the art department.
